It's one of those things Lily has noticed about James. When he's interested in something he's talking about, invested and committed and involved in it -- he's just so animated. His eyes are bright and alert, his hands make grand sweeping gestures as he talks. She doesn't even have to be able to hear what he's saying to know he's on a topic he's excited about.
It's ridiculously attractive.
She doesn't even mind that the topic currently causing this animation is Quidditch.
And it's not really that she would necessarily choose to sit by during a two-hour dissection of the two-hour Slytherin-Hufflepuff match she just watched, but she doesn't mind, either. (It helps everyone's mood, of course, that Slytherin played their worst match of the season, and given their other two losses, that is saying something.)
James takes Quidditch very seriously, and even though Gryffindor won't play either Hufflepuff or Slytherin again till next year, there is still post-game analysis that must be done with the rest of the team. And Lily likes that James takes Quidditch -- his commitment to his team, the responsibility of being Captain -- seriously. She likes it a great deal.
And if that means she has to sit on the other side of the common room for a couple of hours, playing chess with Mary and playing very badly because she's spending as much time watching her boyfriend talk to his team as the she is watching the board . . . well.
He's ridiculously attractive.
That said, neither she nor her poorly commanded chess pieces have any objection when the team's conversation finally breaks up. Or when James, who still clearly has too much energy to spend the afternoon sitting in the common room, suggests that they take a walk around the grounds.

Quidditch does that to him, whether or not he's an active part of it. And besides which, it got all of the Gryffindor team thinking about strategy, and it got him thinking about strategy ...
And while he could spend the rest of his days talking about it, what he really wants to do right now is put that energy to good use.
Like kissing his girlfriend.
Because all through the morning and some hours into the afternoon, James has not been completely remiss of the fact that Lily's been in the common room, putting up with their Quidditch discussions. (Which may have, at certain intervals, gotten a bit ... rowdy. And opinionated.)
no subject
The girlfriend in question, at any rate, has no objections at all.
"So," she says eventually (really very eventually, if we're being honest), with her hands on his shoulders and an expression that she doesn't even try to school into anything but the smile it wants to be, "how's your day been, James?"
no subject
He can feel her warmth beneath his palms, and it's comforting and nice and real, and quite frankly, it makes him happy that he can do this.
That he can do all of this, and she'll respond with a smile like the one she has on her lips now.
"It's about to get better, I reckon."
no subject
"That makes you sound a bit sure of yourself, Potter."
Still with the smile.
"Of course, that doesn't mean you're wrong ... "
no subject
"That'd be terribly tragic."
no subject
Really.
Lily stands up on her toes to kiss James' cheek.
And then she grins at him.
"Race you to the lake."
(The head start she'll get by omitting any kind of warning before she sets off will probably do her absolutely no good, all things considered.)
no subject
"All right," he calls out, watching Lily head for the waterside before he's putting on his own speed to catch up to her.
no subject
Though the way she's laughing would seem to indicate that she's not taking it all that seriously, either.
no subject
In a way that's sort of not assuring at all.
And he's grinning when he catches up to her, arms reaching out to wind themselves around her waist and stop her from getting to the 'finishing line'.
no subject
And it might help her case considerably if she could do so without laughing quite so much.
no subject
Yeah.
He's not taking this even a little bit seriously right now.
Especially when he leans in to kiss Lily instead.
no subject
"You'd break them, anyway."
It's kind of what he does.
Marauder.
no subject
"Mm — you know me so well," he says, grinning.
no subject
"I may one day have to publish the results.
"When I'm done."
no subject
James raises an eyebrow.
"Well, now I'm interested in what you might have to say in this ... study."
no subject
"Subject: One James Ignotus Potter. Age: Seventeen. Hair: Black. Eyes: Hazel. Height: Tall enough without being too tall, which his girlfriend appreciates. Distinguishing features: Glasses. Very attractive smile. Rather ticklish spot inside crook of elbow."
no subject
"I rather like the way this study is going so far," he says. "Not sure the bit about ticklish spots needs to be publicized, though."
You know. Signs of weakness and all that.
no subject
"Where was I ...
"Abilities: Frightfully clever, excellent Potions partner, superb Chaser and Quidditch captain, loyal friend, very good kisser, marvelous boyfriend."
no subject
If he were the one to blush, he'd be red as a beet right now.
As it is, he looks utterly pleased.
no subject
"This is a very serious and impartial study."
She pulls his glasses from his nose and settles them on her own.
"Scholarly, even.
"In fact, I may have to spend the rest of the afternoon doing research."
She somehow doubts James will have any objections to this particular course work.
